Students Enjoy Free College Online Classes In Varied Subjects

So you have decided that online colleges are the way to go. You want to advance your education, maybe brush up on some of the latest innovations, finally finish off the degree program you dropped out of or just want to expand your horizons one way or another. At the same time, you probably grew up going to a traditional classroom with a live teacher and all the other props.

First of all, congratulations! You've taken the first step towards a brighter future. As for that slight bit of dread, there is a way to get familiar with the online class experience, and that is taking a class for free!

What many don't realize is a number of online universities have set these types of courses up as a way to promote education for those who are unable to go the traditional route. The student gets a chance to take a class, usually in one of those subjects needed for any degree, and learn how they'll do in an online format.

The way to start the whole process off is to go to a good search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Do a search for your field of interest. Make a list of the universities or save the page. Now it's time to do a little shopping. See what the school promises. Check out if they are accredited and what kind of classes they offer.

Now it's time to see what sort of free courses each of these colleges offer. Find the one that appeals most. Look to see if it is administered by a teacher you particularly like, covers areas of your interest, etc. Also check to see how in depth the class is. Just because it's a free course doesn't mean you are going to get the full class. Further, see if you could get credit if you do enroll with the school.

After selecting a class, there will more than likely be some kind of registration process. Some schools will only ask for your User ID and email address. Some might ask for more. Also make sure your computer itself can handle the course load. Some may require such software as Windows XP or better, for instance. Also, see if you might have to purchase a text book to take the class.

Now it's time to take your class. If you are like most students, you are trying to determine if online learning is the right experience for you. More than likely, you will quickly learn to appreciate the ability to take the class when you want to, and not be constricted to a timing straight jacket. If the class offers discussion boards as part of the learning process, absolutely take advantage of them.

The opportunity to take a free college online class should not be overlooked or dismissed out of hand. Many of these classes are equivalent to their paid-for counterparts, and the possibility of getting credit for the class is really free college money. Finding out how convenience online classes are and how well you really can do in one may be just the incentive you need to carry through to a degree.

How To Ensure Your Online College Is Accredited

When searching for an online school there are many different components to keep in mind. There are a lot of online schools to go through before deciding which one is the right fit for you. But before considering the programs they offer, the cost of the schooling, and the friendliness of the staff, there is one key factor you need to look for: accreditation.

What is Accreditation?

Websters Dictionary defines accreditation as:

" to recognize (an educational institution) as maintaining standards that qualify the graduates for admission to higher or more specialized institutions or for professional practice."

In essence, accreditation is the way the United States determines the validity of the online school. Accreditation also assures the student that the school meets standards and is a legitimate asset when you go to apply for jobs or enroll in further schooling.

Types of Accreditation

When accrediting online colleges there are three types of accreditation. Within those categories, there are several varying accrediting agencies.

National accrediting agencies are approved to accredit any online education program in the United States. There are six accrediting bodies that fall under the national accrediting umbrella. They are:

Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools
Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology
Accrediting Council of Continuing Education and Training
Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools
Council of Occupational Education
Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission

The United States is divided up into six entities which make up the areas where schools can be regionally accredited. These sub-sections work independently and make up their own validation standards. The country is divided up by the Middle, New England, North Central, Northwestern, Southern, and Western states.

The third and final accreditation type is specialized accreditation. Within this type, schools are accredited based on specific programs. These programs can be anything from nursing to technology, and are recognized as being a legitimate program in their field.

Beware of Diploma Mills

Diploma mills are what make people second guess the valid accredited schools. Diploma mills disguise themselves as legitimate online schools but in reality, the diplomas they hand out do not hold any educational or respected value. They rarely look at a student's academic history and apply your life experiences to your credits earned. They encourage their students to pay more for high honors with their diploma. Beware of any online school that promises you a degree in an impossibly short amount of time or lists no or made up accrediting agencies.

Benefits of Online Schooling

When deciding whether to attend a traditional brick-and-mortar school or complete your education online, there are several factors to consider. Although going to class online means no sitting in a classroom, there are other advantages. Online schools are typically less expensive than going to traditional colleges. In fact, online schools can have down payments as low as $100. Also, because you are in charge of your own education, you have the ability to set your own pace. You can also decide where and when you want to complete your lessons. Structure your education around work and family obligations.

Get the most out of your education by doing your homework. Making sure your online school is accredited ensures you have peace of mind that your schooling can take you where you want to go. By checking the accreditation before enrolling you can be proud to tell people where you went to school and know that your degree and your hard work count.

Not All College Degrees Are The Same Which Is Why School Accreditation Matters

A college degree is, to many extents, both a social and professional certificate of achievement. It represents at minimum several years of dedication and in many cases decades of it. In life, it proves you are capable of learning, and professionally, it proves you are willing to. A college degree is by no means a measure of a person's character, but it can be highly indicative of that person's resolve and commitment to goals.

This correlation between college degrees and learning, commitment, and everyday life is one that has grown more significant each year as more and more students earn collegiate degrees. But it's important to understand where the significance originates. Without some kind of standard in place that offers a measurable quality recognition system, a college degree would simply be another piece of meaningless paper.

The standard comes courtesy of the United States Department of Education. It's called accreditation and it represents exactly the standard just mentioned.

The expressly stated goal of accreditation is to ensure that institutions issuing college degrees are held to the same principles across the board, for the sake of quality education. By creating this standard, there is a communal understanding that colleges with this recognition either meet or exceed "quality" criteria year after year.

There are two primary kinds of accreditation in the United States: national and regional. Each serves its own distinct purpose. While neither is superior to the other, it's important to understand that regional accreditation and nation accreditation each carry their own set of criteria. This can be slightly problematic for students trying to transfer between regionally and nationally accredited schools. This is just one reason why research is an important component to transferring schools.

Regional accreditation is aptly organized by geographic region. There are six divisions in the country, each responsible for their own group of states. These councils oversee public and private institutions throughout the country. These six are the only governing bodies that can issue regional accreditation to any college. They are all recognized by the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

National accreditation is slightly different in that it is not segregated regionally, but rather by specific interest. A council for distance education, for example, would accredit colleges that offer distance education. These national accreditation agencies exist to offer the same standard regional accreditation offers, but to an exclusive kind of institution. Often these institutions offer teaching modes or methodologies that are not as "typical" as the schools in regional accreditation programs, and so the national accreditation offers them their own recognition standard.

Choosing between national and regional accreditation is not a decision most college students face. This is probably because the advantages to each are not comparable to each other. Students seeking specialized schools with national accreditation for their college degrees will likely not care that it is not regionally accredited, since it offers the program the student is looking for, and vice versa. Whichever college path you choose, traditional or through online colleges, know that accreditation is important, in either form. It serves as a regulator of sorts, promising and delivering to students the quality education they pay for.

Online School is Perfect For Those That Can't Commute to a College Campus

Going back to school can be an investment in the future, a way to make yourself more marketable, particularly in a tight job market. Internet-based classes and online degree programs make this endeavor convenient, accessible from virtually anywhere students happen to be and at times that don't interfere with responsibilities such as work and child-rearing.

An array of Internet schools have cropped up, and "colleges with walls" have, through the Internet, broken barriers to reach a wide array of men and women who otherwise might not be able to physically attend school. But while studies show that students enrolled in online classes performed as well or better than those in conventional classrooms, some research has suggested that the dropout rate among virtual learners tends to be slightly higher.

Students enrolled in online classes and online degree programs have to be "very self-motivated and very self-disciplined," Ladies' Home Journal Editor-in-Chief Sally Lee last year told Today Show co-host Ann Curry.

Nurses, particularly, have turned to distance learning to pursue bachelor of science degrees in their field. And many businessmen and women are said to opt for online colleges for obtaining masters degrees in business administration, Lee said. She advised against passive learning and noted that many "virtual" schools now offer online communities that allow for meeting diverse groups of people. Some virtual classes and online degree programs also offer two-way interactive video and audio-and the Institute for Higher Education Policy has recommended that the development of interactive programs like these continue.

The Institute in 1999 released a "What's the Difference?" study revealing that students who succeeded in computer-mediated education were often married, women and those with high literacy skills. Students who considered themselves persistent in taking on new projects and organized with regard to management skills had characteristics associated with online college success. So did individuals who work well independently, according to the study.

When taking classes on line or in person, it's important for students to select a college, university or trade school that suits their needs and goals and to compare costs, after tuition fees and any and all financial aid is taken into account. Individuals interested pursuing distance learning classes and online degree programs particularly should also:

Make sure the institution is accredited by one of the six regional boards and/or the Distance Education and Training Council. Accreditation means that the institution provides an education that meets minimum standards, and this makes a difference to many employers, transfer credit recipients and career endeavors such as taking the bar exam. Also, beware of "degree mills" -- virtual entities go so far as to offer degrees in as few as five days or based exclusively on life experience, according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, which provides a list of accredited colleges on its Web site.

Make sure online classes offer the level of support and interaction they need.

Set aside the time needed to take online classes, and take studies seriously. Successful online students surveyed for "What's the Difference?" said they had the time to do what they intended to do and considered the consequences of failure to be serious.

Students of schools online believe in themselves. "What's the Difference?" students experiencing success with an online degree rated their chances of succeeding higher than those who didn't complete their studies.

Recent High School Grads Benefit From Online College Flexibility and Convenience

As a recent high school graduate, you've probably been thinking about what you're going to do now that high school is over. You may want to work, or you may want to travel or pursue other interests, but you know that education is definitely in your future. If a traditional college isn't exactly what you're looking for, an online college or school may be the perfect fit.

Another reason to think about an online degree is if you aren't sure you want to complete four years of college. If you're undecided, you can complete an online associate degree before you decide to finish your bachelor's degree. A college online can offer you an associate degree in just about any field, from a liberal arts degree to a degree that will lead you straight into a job after graduation, like a nursing degree.

One of the benefits of an online school degree is the cost factor. Going to a regular college involves a lot of extra expenses like dorm costs, meal plans, and commuting. Taking classes online eliminates all of those extra expenses.

As an incoming freshman at just about any university, you will be one of the last students to register because upper classmen usually get preference to register first. That means you'll probably get stuck with classes that are at very inconvenient times. Algebra at 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning doesn't sound very appealing, does it? An online school gets rid of these kinds of inconveniences because you do the class work on your schedule when it's convenient for you. Plus, you can start online college immediately after graduating from high school; there's no need to wait until the fall if you don't want to.

One problem that might concern new high school graduates is the ability to pay for college. Accredited online colleges and universities can accept FAFSA scholarship money just like regular colleges do. If you want to go to online school and use grant, loan, or scholarship money, just make sure to finish the application prior to the deadlines on the FAFSA website that is appropriate for you.

If you're a student who has the travel bug, you can still continue your education while you travel all over the world. As long as your destination has a good Internet connection, you can complete your studies while you are traveling, whether it's here in the States or in Europe, Asia, or the Southern Hemisphere. An online school can help you fulfill your dreams of education at the same time you are fulfilling your dream of traveling and exploring the world.

Perhaps you're the kind of student who likes to keep busy all the time; you want to work full time to make your mark in the world while you're going to school. Asking Yourself Some Questions Before Attending College Online Ups Chances of Success

Many students enroll in online college degree programs for the convenience. Students these days might choose from online certificate offerings and degree programs provided by two and four year colleges and universities and by vocational schools that train students for specific jobs.

Students who learn better through visual offerings and experiential tasks and those who are introverted, have language barriers, or require more time for studies might particularly fare well in college online, according to career author, publisher and Web site founder and CEO Randall S. Hansen. Working students might be more easily able to participate in online school offerings where they control the pace, Hansen noted. A student's motivation can also be one of the strongest indicators of success with online schools, and students should have at least basic technology skills and set time commitments for their studies, an April article in U.S. News & World Report suggested.

College online or otherwise is a big investment in time and money, the National Center for Education Statistics reminded. Finding the right online college might not only be important as far as achieving career goals. It might make a difference in how successful students are with their studies. Students interested in spending their time and money wisely might consider:

Their needs and goals: Identify online schools with reputations and online programs best suited to those needs and goals. Guidance counselors, people who've participated in specific colleges online and those who work within fields of interest might help. Students can visit campuses and browse the websites for online schools in which they're interested.

Their communication preferences: College programs online can be offered entirely from a distance or through a combination of online and classroom instruction. Some online classes might be led by instructors who respond more quickly to questions and concerns than others and who offer interactive elements, such as message boards, according to reports. Some online instructors might also deliver coursework through a wider variety of technologies, such as video and audio, reports suggest. Students might consider courses where instructors have been trained to teach online, according to information in the U.S. News & World Report article. Being engaged and involved in studies can be important, the report noted.

Their schedules: Online college programs are often identified with allowing students to schedule studies around work and family responsibilities. Some online course formats might be more flexible than others, according to reports.

An online school's credentials: When a college online or otherwise is accredited by a nationally recognized agency, it's more likely students can transfer credits and obtain federal financial aid, the U.S. Department of Education suggested. Many colleges online or otherwise are accredited by one of six regional accrediting agencies. The U.S. News & World Report article also suggested that department and degree programs have specialized accreditation from professional associations, such as the American Dental and American Bar associations. Students can check with institutions to determine which agency or agencies have granted accreditation and confirm any information with the Department of Education and those accrediting agencies, according to a report from the ERIC Clearinghouse on Education. Students can review recognized accrediting agencies on the Department of Education Web site, the article reports. They might also contact the Better Business Bureau, state higher education agency, or the state attorney general's office to find out whether any complaints have been filed about the school, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Costs: Students participating in online college classes and online degree programs can save money that they might otherwise spend on meal plans, campus housing and commuting to and from school. Online tuition reportedly costs about the same as tuition for campus-based classes, and students interested in obtaining financial aid for tuition at accredited institutions might apply for grants, scholarships, fellowships and work study offerings that schools, government agencies, corporate giants, non-profit organizations and community and civic groups make available. A 2009 Society for Human Resources Management report showed most employers offering tuition reimbursement in the survey extend the same assistance for online college classes as they do campus-based classes. Deducting the amount of any assistance from the cost of tuition at different online colleges and universities might put some schools within easier financial reach and help students decide on the online degree or certificate program that provides the best investment for them.

Weighing all the factors involved, online college degree programs are the smart choice for so many. This includes the new student to the career employee looking to advance via an online masters program. Essentially, distance education is the future and the promise of what it offers is bright.

In the United States, many of the colleges will most likely be regional certified: meaning that they are a school that is certified from only one in six regions. High School Accreditation and College Acceptance

Graduates from online and private high school programs may face additional challenges when applying to colleges and universities. These hurdles are caused by a difference in the high schools' level of accreditation, or the lack thereof. The most universal form is Regional Accreditation, which is accepted nationwide by colleges, universities, public high schools, and other educational institutions. All public schools are regionally accredited, and as part of their accreditation they are required to accept credits from other regionally accredited schools. The second standard is a National Accreditation, a much looser standard that isn't always accepted. It's important to note that while Nationally Accredited may seem like it is more valued than Regional Accreditation, it's actually much less valuable. Regional is a much better option than National, and the regionally accredited diplomas go much further.

How Universities in Oklahoma Process Applications

There is even a difference between universities in Oklahoma based on what accreditation they will accept. Here's what we've found:

Oklahoma Christian University

Admission requirements for OCU allow students to apply with any diploma, as long as it was awarded from an accredited institution. Students could use either a Regionally, or Nationally Accredited diploma, as long as the accreditation was current at the time of issuing.

Oklahoma State University

OSU accepts all diplomas from Regionally Accredited high schools, and only accepts Nationally accredited diplomas on a case-by-case basis after evaluating the high school curriculum. Diplomas from non-accredited schools aren't accepted at all, so a student who graduated from a non-accredited school will need to complete a GED before being accepted. If a student has a Nationally Accredited diploma, their acceptance will be tied heavily to their scores on the ACT or SAT exams.

University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma accepts all diplomas from Regionally Accredited high schools, but they won't accept any diplomas from Nationally Accredited schools.

The Regional Accreditation Agencies

It's important to check your schools accreditation status with the regional agencies. Here is a list of the 6 regional agencies and the states that they service.
